NONG KHAI
THE VILLAGE WEAVERS
Across
from Laos, along the Mekong River is the bustling town of Nong Khai, home of 'The Village Weavers'. In their world
of malnutrition and poverty, it seemed impossible for the villagers to sustain themselves and they often migrated to larger
urban areas. To assist in stemming this exodus, a group of Good Shepherd Sisters, in 1981, began promoting 'self help.'
The project recognized the unique beauty of indigo
dyed 'mudmee' cotton that is exclusively produced in the North East.
The indigo plants are hand picked and fermented
in earthenware jars in preparation for dyeing the homespun cotton.
While adapting the
weaving for a larger market, great care is taken in preserving the traditional techniques and patterns.
The Village Weaver program through the art of weaving, leads women toward
self sufficiency while achieving economic and personal development within the communities.
